Frank LaLumia painting on Location in the Barkhor in Lhasa Tibet, May 1992
Travel Sketchbooks of Frank LaLumia
The Barkhor is an area of narrow streets and a public square located around the Jokhang Temple in the heart of Lhasa. There are outdoor markets as well as a devotional circumambulation for pilgrims and locals alike. It is an area where anything can, and usually does happen. When it comes to a good adrenaline rush, I can think of few things that deliver more than painting on location in some of the exotic venues-Tibet, India, China, Morocco; (I could go on…). We live in an amazing world. It’s not easy. You have to set up, get in, and get out before things spiral out of control. They say a picture is worth a thousand words-sometimes. In this case, a thousand words is not enough.
